What do nose strips actually do?
Nose strips are drug-free external nasal dilators. Their flexible bands gently pull the skin and sidewalls of the nose outward, supporting the nasal valve—the narrowest section of the nasal airway. This can reduce nasal resistance and make nasal breathing feel easier for some people. They may be useful for sleep, snoring linked to nasal resistance, exercise comfort and temporary congestion, but they do not cure sleep apnoea, treat allergies, remove polyps, increase lung capacity or straighten a deviated septum.
What are nose strips?
Nose strips are small devices worn across the outside of the nose. Most disposable versions combine a skin-safe adhesive layer with flexible spring-like bands. When the bands try to return to their original shape, they lift the skin and help hold the nasal sidewalls outward.
In clinical research they are usually called external nasal dilators. They differ from internal nasal dilators, which sit inside the nostrils, and from medicated nasal sprays, which act on swollen tissue.
A short history of nose strips
External nasal dilator strips became widely recognised in the 1990s, particularly after athletes began wearing them in televised sport. Their visibility created strong public interest, but it also produced exaggerated assumptions about oxygen, endurance and performance.
The basic concept is mechanical rather than pharmaceutical: widen or stabilise the front of the nasal airway without delivering a medicine.
The anatomy that matters
Nasal valve
The narrowest part of the nasal airway and the main region external strips are designed to support.
Nasal sidewalls
These may pull inward during inhalation when the valve is narrow or structurally weak.
Septum and turbinates
Deeper structures can restrict airflow but are not physically changed by an external strip.
The nose warms, humidifies and filters inspired air and contributes to immune defence and smell. Supporting the nasal valve may help airflow through the front of the nose, but it does not address every cause of obstruction.
How do nose strips work?
Airflow resistance rises sharply as an airway becomes narrower. Because the nasal valve is already the tightest part of the nasal passage, even a modest mechanical change may alter how easy breathing feels.
Research reviews report that external nasal dilators can increase the cross-sectional area of the nasal valve, reduce nasal resistance and help stabilise the lateral nasal wall during inspiration. Many studies are small, so these mechanical effects should not be confused with proof of major health or performance outcomes.
What nose strips do not change
- They do not enlarge the lungs.
- They do not add oxygen to the blood.
- They do not dissolve mucus or reduce allergic inflammation.
- They do not remove nasal polyps.
- They do not straighten the nasal septum.
- They do not prevent throat collapse in obstructive sleep apnoea.
- They do not permanently reshape the nose.
Why do some people notice a big difference?
The greatest perceived benefit often occurs when the front part of the nose is a meaningful source of resistance. A person with a narrow nasal valve, mild sidewall collapse or temporary front-of-nose congestion may notice an immediate change.
Someone whose obstruction is deeper—such as large polyps, severe turbinate swelling or a major septal deviation—may notice little improvement.
The simple cheek-pull clue
Gently pulling the cheek outward beside the nose may temporarily widen the valve. If this makes breathing clearly easier, external support may be relevant. Clinicians use more formal versions of this concept, but a home cheek-pull is not a diagnosis.
What does the research say about nose strips?
The evidence is mixed because studies examine different products, populations and outcomes. A strip can improve nasal patency without necessarily changing a complex outcome such as sleep apnoea severity, race time or VO₂ max.

Why improved airflow does not always mean improved performance
Athletic performance depends on the lungs, heart, blood, muscles, training status, technique, pacing, recovery and psychology. In healthy people, the front of the nose is not usually the main factor limiting maximal oxygen use.
Athletes may still value easier-feeling nasal airflow, particularly during warm-ups, low-intensity training, transitions or recovery.
Why improved nasal airflow does not cure sleep apnoea
Obstructive sleep apnoea usually involves repeated narrowing or collapse of the throat during sleep. The nose can affect comfort and breathing route, but opening the nose does not reliably prevent collapse deeper in the upper airway.
Nose strips for sleep
Nose strips may make nighttime nasal breathing feel easier when the front of the nose contributes to resistance. People often try them for a blocked feeling when lying down, dry mouth, mouth breathing or noisy breathing.
The outcome depends on the cause. A strip may support a narrow nasal valve but cannot treat uncontrolled allergy, chronic sinus disease or a major structural blockage.
Possible nighttime benefits
- Easier-feeling nasal airflow.
- Less awareness of front-of-nose restriction.
- Potentially less mouth breathing when nasal obstruction is mild.

Nose strips for snoring
Snoring occurs when soft tissues vibrate as air moves through a narrowed upper airway. The nose can contribute by increasing resistance and encouraging mouth breathing, but many snores arise mainly from the soft palate, tongue or throat.
Some clinical trials found reduced snoring in selected people, including those with chronic rhinitis. Broader reviews suggest the average benefit is modest and not consistent across everyone.
Who is most likely to notice a snoring benefit?
- People who feel visibly or subjectively congested at night.
- People whose snoring worsens during allergy season or a cold.
- People who breathe more easily when the side of the nose is pulled outward.
- People whose nasal sidewalls collapse slightly on inhalation.
Who needs a sleep assessment instead?
Seek professional assessment for:
- Loud habitual snoring with witnessed breathing pauses.
- Gasping, choking or repeated awakenings.
- Marked daytime sleepiness.
- Morning headaches.
- High blood pressure with suspected sleep-disordered breathing.
- Falling asleep while driving or during routine activities.
Nose strips and mouth tape
Nose strips and mouth tape do different things. A nose strip supports the nasal valve. Mouth tape encourages the lips to remain closed.
Do not tape the mouth to force nasal breathing through an obstructed nose. People with suspected sleep apnoea, significant respiratory or heart disease, nausea, impaired ability to remove the tape or substantial nasal blockage should seek professional guidance.
Nose strips for running, gym and sport
Athletes commonly use nose strips because they prefer the sensation of a more open nose. They may be particularly appealing during warm-ups, easy aerobic sessions, gym work, HYROX transitions, cycling and recovery periods.
Running
A strip may make nasal breathing more comfortable at easy intensity. As pace increases, combined nose-and-mouth breathing becomes normal and should not be viewed as failure.
HYROX and functional fitness
During stations and hard running, ventilation demand is high. A strip may support the nasal valve, but athletes should allow unrestricted mouth breathing when needed.
Strength training
Some lifters like improved nasal comfort between sets. The strip does not change safe bracing technique or remove the need for appropriate breathing during lifts.
Cycling
Riders may value external support in cool or dry air, during endurance pacing or when nasal sidewalls feel unstable at higher airflow.
Team sport
In AFL, NRL, football and similar sports, strips may support comfort during repeated changes in intensity. They do not replace conditioning or treatment for asthma and exercise-induced airway symptoms.
What the exercise evidence means
A systematic review reported no improvement in VO₂ max, heart rate or ratings of perceived exertion in healthy participants. This does not mean nobody experiences comfort; it means athletes should not expect a guaranteed physiological performance gain.

Clear versus black nose strips
The colour alone does not determine effectiveness. Differences usually come from the backing material, spring strength, adhesive, dimensions and intended use.
Clear strips may suit discreet wear and sensitive skin. Black woven strips may appeal to athletes or people who want a more visible, robust design.
What are magnetic nose strips?
Magnetic systems usually use adhesive tabs placed on each side of the nose and a reusable bridge that connects magnetically. Like disposable strips, they aim to pull or support the sidewalls outward.
The magnets do not “magnetise” airflow or increase oxygen. The functional effect comes from mechanical tension.
Disposable versus reusable nasal support
Disposable strips provide a fresh adhesive surface each use. Reusable systems reduce replacement of the main bridge but still commonly require fresh skin tabs.
The best choice depends on comfort, convenience, cost per wear, skin sensitivity and how reliably the product stays in place.
How to choose the right nose strip
Nose strip sizing
A strip that is too small may not reach the sidewalls effectively. One that is too large may extend onto the cheeks, wrinkle or lift at the edges.

Wash the skin

Position the strip across the lower bridge, above the nostril openings—not high between the eyes and not directly over the nostril rims.
Centre the strip

Apply before heavy sweating or getting into bed rather than during active perspiration.
Where exactly should a nose strip sit?
The strip should cross the area where the firm upper bridge transitions toward the softer lower sidewalls. If it is too high, it may miss the nasal valve. If it is too low, it may interfere with the nostril openings or lift during facial movement.
How to remove a nose strip
Use warm water in the shower or wet the strip and surrounding adhesive. Lift one edge and peel slowly toward the centre while supporting the skin. Do not rip it off quickly.
Can you reuse disposable nose strips?
No. Once removed, the adhesive and spring alignment are no longer designed for reliable reuse.

Why does a nose strip leave marks?
Temporary pressure or adhesive marks may occur, particularly with strong strips or long wear. Persistent redness, blistering, swelling or broken skin suggests irritation and the product should be stopped.

- Patch-test for a shorter period before overnight use.
- Choose a gentler adhesive or clear sensitive-skin option.
- Do not apply directly after exfoliating, shaving or using active skincare.
- Remove slowly with warm water.
- Allow the skin to recover if redness persists.
Can skincare affect adhesion?
Yes. Moisturiser, facial oil, sunscreen, retinoids and silicone-based products can reduce adhesion or increase skin sensitivity. Apply the strip to clean bare skin.
Can facial hair stop a strip from sticking?
Hair between the adhesive and skin reduces contact. The strip must sit on skin rather than dense hair to work reliably.
Are nose strips safe?
Most adults can use external nose strips safely when following the instructions. The main risks are local skin irritation, discomfort and damage caused by forceful removal.
Do not apply a nose strip over:
- Broken or infected skin.
- Fresh sunburn.
- Active dermatitis or eczema.
- A healing surgical site.
- A recent nasal injury unless cleared by a clinician.
Are nose strips safe every night?
Many people can use them nightly if the skin remains healthy. Rotate placement slightly only within the correct valve area, remove gently and take a break if irritation develops.
Can children use nose strips?
Use only products specifically labelled for the child's age and size, with adult supervision. Persistent mouth breathing, snoring, blocked breathing or sleep problems in a child should be assessed rather than managed indefinitely with strips.
Can you use nose strips during pregnancy?
Because they are non-medicated and act externally, many people consider them during pregnancy. Skin sensitivity can change, so follow directions and seek individual advice where needed. They do not treat pregnancy rhinitis itself.
Can you use nose strips with CPAP?
Some CPAP users find nasal support improves comfort. Make sure the strip does not interfere with the mask seal. Ongoing CPAP difficulties should be discussed with a sleep clinician or equipment provider.
