Should cyclists breathe only through the nose?

What research says about cycling performance
External nasal dilators can reduce nasal resistance, but that does not automatically translate into better athletic performance. A systematic review of exercise studies found no significant improvement in VO₂max, heart rate or perceived exertion in healthy participants using external nasal dilator strips.
The sensible claim is therefore about subjective airflow comfort—not guaranteed power, pace or oxygen delivery. Useful does not have to mean faster. If a strip feels comfortable and removes a minor distraction, that can be worthwhile. Test it against your normal setup and judge comfort separately from performance.

A six-step pre-ride routine
Test it on an easy ride
Choose a familiar local route for the first trial. You should know how your skin and the adhesive respond before a race, fondo or long rural ride.
Clean the placement area
Remove moisturiser, oil and sweat, then let the skin dry completely. Avoid applying over broken, sunburnt or irritated skin.
Apply before the warm-up
Position the strip according to its instructions and press the ends down firmly. Give the adhesive 15–30 minutes to bond before heavy sweating.
Use natural breathing
Allow mouth breathing whenever the effort requires it. The goal is a comfortable nasal passage, not a forced nose-only session.
Carry one spare

Remove it gently
After riding, use warm water and peel slowly. Discontinue use if you experience blistering, pain, swelling or persistent redness.
Road, gravel, mountain bike and indoor riding
Road cycling: wind exposure and sustained speed can make the nose feel dry or irritated. A strip only changes the nasal opening; hydration, suitable clothing and pacing still matter.
Gravel and mountain biking: dust, pollen and mud may affect comfort. A nasal strip does not filter particles or treat allergies. Avoid adjusting it with dirty gloves, and remove it if grit becomes trapped under the adhesive.
Indoor training: sweat is usually the main adhesion challenge. Apply well before the session, use a fan and keep a towel available. A strip cannot compensate for poor room ventilation or overheating.
Commuting: comfort matters, but attention belongs on the road. Never try to apply or reposition a strip while moving. Pull over somewhere safe first.
Breathing comfort never replaces cycling safety
New Zealand's official cycling guidance says riders must wear a correctly fitted helmet, have good brakes and use the required lights and reflectors for the conditions. It also covers positioning, signalling, intersections, shared paths and riding around other road users.

Persistent one-sided blockage, repeated nosebleeds, facial pain or ongoing difficulty breathing through the nose should be assessed by a healthcare professional. A strip may temporarily change how open the front of the nose feels, but it does not diagnose the reason for the blockage.
Choosing a strip for active use
- Choose a size that sits across the nasal sidewalls without covering the nostrils.
- Look for an active-use adhesive designed to handle movement and perspiration.
