How air moves through the nose

The narrowest part of the nasal airway is commonly the nasal valve. Small changes in this area can create a noticeable difference in airflow resistance. This is why lifting the side of the nose, changing head position or using an external nasal dilator can make breathing feel easier for some people.

Farther inside the nose, the turbinates increase surface area and create airflow patterns that improve warming, humidification and filtration.

A useful distinction: “nasal breathing” describes the breathing route. It does not automatically mean breathing slowly, deeply or correctly. A person can still overbreathe through the nose.

Potential benefits of nasal breathing

The strongest benefits of nasal breathing are related to normal nasal physiology. Claims that nasal breathing dramatically increases oxygen, cures disease or guarantees better athletic performance go beyond the evidence.

Nasal breathing and nitric oxide

Nitric oxide is produced in several tissues, including the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses. When a person inhales through the nose, some of this nitric oxide travels with the inspired air toward the lungs.

Nitric oxide has important roles in blood-vessel regulation and airway biology. However, the health impact of everyday nasal nitric oxide is frequently overstated online. It is reasonable to say that nasal breathing transports locally produced nitric oxide; it is not reasonable to claim that this alone creates dramatic whole-body effects.

A small laboratory study found that humming produced a large temporary increase in measured nasal nitric oxide compared with quiet exhalation, probably because humming improves gas exchange between the sinuses and nasal cavity. This does not mean humming treats infection, sinus disease or low oxygen.

Does nasal breathing increase oxygen?

In healthy people at rest, blood oxygen saturation is usually already high. Changing from mouth to nose breathing may alter airflow sensation and breathing pattern without creating a meaningful rise in oxygen saturation.

During intense exercise, forcing nasal-only breathing can actually limit ventilation in people who are not adapted to it. Oral or combined breathing allows larger volumes of air to move when exercise demands rise.

Bottom line: nasal breathing can support efficient, comfortable breathing at appropriate intensities, but “more nasal breathing” does not automatically mean “more oxygen.”

Nasal breathing versus mouth breathing

Nasal breathing is generally useful for

Nasal breathing and sleep

The nose is generally the preferred breathing route during sleep. Nasal obstruction can encourage mouth breathing and is associated with snoring and sleep-disordered breathing in some people.

However, the relationship is not simple. Nasal blockage can worsen sleep-related breathing, but it is not the main cause of moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnoea in most people.

Possible signs of nighttime mouth breathing

  • Waking with a dry mouth or sore throat.
  • Drooling on the pillow.
  • Snoring that becomes worse when congested.
  • Feeling that the nose closes when lying down.
  • Needing to keep the mouth open to breathe comfortably.

Possible sleep-apnoea signs need assessment

Loud habitual snoring, witnessed breathing pauses, gasping, choking, morning headaches and marked daytime sleepiness can indicate obstructive sleep apnoea. Nasal breathing exercises, nose strips and mouth tape should not replace proper assessment.

Does nasal breathing improve sleep quality?

Comfortable nasal breathing may help sleep when congestion, nasal resistance or dry-mouth symptoms are part of the problem. Improving nasal airflow can also make prescribed nasal CPAP interfaces more tolerable for selected users.

It does not guarantee more deep sleep or REM sleep, and nasal aids alone do not reliably treat sleep apnoea.

Should you tape your mouth to force nasal breathing?

Mouth taping has become popular online, but evidence for broad use is limited. A recent systematic review highlighted the lack of strong evidence for treating obstructive sleep apnoea and identified potential risks when mouth taping is used indiscriminately, particularly by people with nasal obstruction or unrecognised sleep-related breathing problems.

Do not use mouth tape when you cannot breathe comfortably through the nose, have significant nasal congestion, are at risk of vomiting, have certain respiratory conditions, or suspect sleep apnoea without professional guidance.

Nasal breathing during exercise

Nasal breathing can be a useful pacing tool during warm-ups, easy runs, walking, cycling and lower-intensity conditioning. Some studies report lower perceived breathing effort, altered ventilatory efficiency or favourable physiological measures at submaximal workloads.

The evidence does not support forcing nasal-only breathing during every workout. As intensity rises, the body needs to move more air. Mouth or combined breathing often becomes the practical route for achieving higher ventilation.

What is a normal nasal breathing rate?
